Finally, I’m getting back into my blog. It’s been a while.
I have still been gaming, but strangely, not writing as much as I used to It’s for that reason I am heading back into the blog-o-sphere to catch up on a few games and related content. The first of which is this fun little documentary put out over this weekend by Zack Penn and Microsoft Studios, that focuses on the infamous “E.T. burial” in the landfill of Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Often reviled as “The Worst Video Game in History”, I remember getting E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial back in the Winter of 1982. I was seven years old. Video games were a very different creature back then, where the line between console gaming and arcades were vast. E.T., when it was released was on par with any Halo, Grand Theft Auto, or Super Smash Bros. release: It was huge. And yet its biggest accomplishment was being credited for single-handedly destroying the video game industry, and causing the “Great Crash of 1983”.
All of this from one little game. Ouch.

I was late to the Minecraft game. Sure, I’ve heard about the “build anything you want” premise that the game has, but being more a MacBook person, I never got around to trying the title on PC.
That changed when the game came to the Xbox 360.
This version of the title is essentially “Minecraft Lite”, a smaller version of the PC world, with less mod options. For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s basically a giant virtual Lego set. Even moreso than than the actual Lego games (although Lego has created an official Lego Minecraft set). It’s a world where you can create, break down, relocate, and is fueled by the power of your imagination. It almost sounds like a marketing tagline, doesn’t it? But at least it’s true.
Pretty much everything can be affected in the world. If not reused in its original form, the elements can be used to create something else. It’s a world of ice and oceans, caves and mountains, forests and beaches. And it’s populated by a number of unusual inhabitants. When you start the game, you are very much on your own. It’s amazing how a system update can either make or break a system. For this particular entry, I can actually site an example of both. In this case, I wanted to discuss the differences between the new Xbox dashboard versus the 3DS update.
I’ve been on the fence about Microsoft’s “evolution” with the Xbox. Between the introduction of Kinect, and the attempt to recreate the nuances of the Wii (one system that NEVER updates, and at this point, never will), they’ve broken down the easy to navigate style, and somewhat utilitarian functionality of the Dashboard. Certainly, it was simple, but it was to the point. Something that I appreciated.
The last updates change introduced a lot of “whooshing” sound effects to every motion you made (which was thankfully able to be disabled), and while different, was manageable enough to compensate for and become familiar with. I wasn’t a huge fan of 2010-2011’s look in comparison to previous years, but “eh”. What can you do?
I do not like the new interface. At all.

I knew that when the day came for Skyrim‘s release, my social life would be taking a hit. And I was was. But you never expect how it will take over.
When I first played Oblivion, I found that I couldn’t. There are few games that offer you that much of an open world. That much freedom. And it overwhelmed me. But one day I sat down, convinced that I would master its expansive world. And it eventually all began to make sense. And took over my gaming time.
Skyrim, while seeming less unfamiliar, and less daunting, is no less impressive. In fact, it helps to make the last game that much more of a tangible place, and this is merely an expansion of that world to make it all the more “real”. It’s like going on a vacation: You may have never been to that new place before, but somehow you know this is all part of the greater whole. You almost wish that the games could be connected as one.

Finally, after a few weeks of being MIA, I’ve finally returned to what I hope will be a normal posting schedule.
Being that my personal schedule had gotten the better of me for well over a month, I didn’t have a lot of time to play video games, which in turn made for a very boring blog. It’s a little hard to write about something when you aren’t able to bring something to the table.
But November, which is absolutely teeming with gaming goodness in the form of a new Zelda, Skyrim, and Mario‘s 3DS debut, I’ll have things to cover.
I have put in some gaming time this month already, however. I’ve been playing Aliens: Infestation for the Nintendo DS, and am finally getting my feet wet with Batman: Arkham City. At least I can post some initial impressions about these two.
Long time readers knew that I was waiting for the DS Aliens game. A video popped up a few years back on YouTube, then was yanked down, and the game disappeared into the shadows for a long time. The new R2-D2 Xbox 360 with matching C-3PO controller is pretty much all I want now.
This is the coolest console variant I have ever seen.
The console even beeps like Artoo when you power it on and open the disc tray.
Why do they do these things to me?!?
